Description
Louis XVI-style writing table A rectangular table in mahogany and mahogany veneer, with a single drawer set into the side, adorned with a diamond-shaped gilded brass keyhole. It stands on four tapered fluted legs, finished with gilded brass feet. The top, with a slightly moulded overhang, opens to reveal an interior compartment: a tray lined with gilded leather and framed by a Greek frieze, flanked by side compartments (probably intended for writing or sewing materials). A ‘CANABAS’ mark is visible on an internal crossbar, accompanied by a second, partially legible mark (probably the guild mark JME — Juré des Menuisiers-Ébénistes, as is customary on authentic pieces by this master). Original or period metal key preserved. Attribution: Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas (1715–1797), master craftsman in 1766 Period: Louis XVI, late 18th century Technique: satin-finished wood (lemon tree), veneer, gilded brass fittings Probable function: writing/sewing table with a sliding mechanism, tilting top with compartments Dimensions: Height: 68 cm; Length: 58 cm; Width: 88 cm
