Description
A pair of Medici-style vases in matt and polished gilded bronze, resting on a fluted pedestal decorated with a torus of laurel leaves, each vase flanked by two bare-busted caryatid figures supporting the neck, which is adorned with a design of acanthus leaves and scrolls.
Each vase features, on its body, a lapis lazuli-blue lacquered ground upon which is depicted a frieze of women draped in the classical style and playing musical instruments, like maenads worshipping Dionysus.
Dimensions: 40 x 27 cm.
Late 18th or early 19th century.
This aesthetic, drawing on subjects from antiquity, bears a clear resemblance to a Sèvres porcelain vase held at the Louvre Museum and catalogued as ‘Large vase from the Gallery of Diana at the Château de Saint-Cloud’ and attributed to the workshop of the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot and the bronze caster Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
