Description
FRENCH SCHOOL, c. 1800. ‘Biblical scene depicting Jacob and Laban’s daughters’. Fleeing after having stolen his brother Esau’s blessing, Jacob arrives in the land of his uncle Laban. Near a well, he meets the young women who have come to water their flocks; Rachel steps forward with her sheep. Jacob then rolls away the stone sealing the well’s opening and gives Rachel’s flock water: a pivotal gesture, marking the beginning of their story and the long destiny of the patriarch, the future father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Oil on canvas. H.35 L.47.
