Description
Archaeology. Egypt. A rare amulet depicting the Baboon of Thoth, carved from hard white limestone with a lustrous antique patina. Height approx. 3.3 cm excluding the plinth. Piece mounted on a plinth. The monkey, whose cries herald the rising of the sun, is the sacred animal of the god of scribes, wisdom, magic and the moon. It is depicted seated on a pedestal decorated with a palace façade, with a pendant naos, its virile attribute and tail clearly visible, and its fur finely detailed. Provenance: public auction in France, formerly from a French private collection. As is (with missing parts). Late Period to Ptolemaic (711–30 BC).
