Description
Rare Egyptian Gebel Kamil meteorite, oriented, in a shield-shaped form. Approx. 320.5g. Dimensions: approx. 9 x 4.5 x 2.5cm. A rare specimen of this size and type. Nickel-rich ataxite. An impact crater 45 metres in diameter was discovered in 2009 in the south-west of the Western Desert, on the Gilf el-Kebir plateau. Total mass approximately 1.6 tonnes. The impact was dated by thermoluminescence to between 1600 and 400 BC, representing a cataclysmic event during the Pharaonic period, between the beginning of the New Kingdom and the end of the Late Period. Around 1300 BC, a hieroglyphic term appeared, transcribed as ‘biA-n-pt’, meaning ‘iron from the sky’. The tomb of Tutankhamun, who died around 1327 BC, contained 19 objects made of meteoritic iron, including the famous dagger with an iron blade and a gold hilt.
