John Mite OCCITANIE SERIES 31 x 34 cm The Occitanie Series, launched in 2026, is a reflection on the memory of urban and industrial areas. It pays tribute to the factories, industrial wastelands and derelict sites that were once places of work, life and creativity before becoming spaces of expression for several generations of graffiti artists. My sculptures are trompe-l’œil works created entirely in the studio. Mainly made from sculpted polystyrene foam and then enhanced with contemporary materials and patinas, they recreate the appearance of concrete, cracks, reinforcing bars and the traces of time. I never remove any elements from the original sites. Each place must remain where it is and retain its history. My work consists of reconstructing their memory rather than moving their remains. Through this collection, I seek to honour the memory of places once linked to a human, industrial and social history, by transforming these forgotten architectural structures into works of contemplation. ‘I do not remove the remnants of reality. I reconstruct its memory.’
