A JOURNEY TO MYANMAR
The photograph shown was taken during a trip to Myanmar in the autumn of 2016 near an unfinished monument (Mingun Pahtodawgyi) north-west of Mandalay. After exploring some of the country’s iconic landscapes on my own (Inle Lake, Rangoon, etc.), I joined a small group of photography enthusiasts and, thanks to our guide, we were able to visit orphanages and monasteries and gain an insight into the monks’ daily lives. This young monk allowed us to take a few photos whilst he was meditating. Nathalie Bourdaud I have been a paediatric anaesthetist since 2002 and have been working in the paediatric operating theatre at the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant in Lyon (HFME) for over 12 years. Ever since I started at Necker, and now at the HFME, I’ve been working with children to make their time in the operating theatre as pleasant and fun as possible. Alongside my job, I’ve always loved travelling, and exploring the world has been part of my life ever since I was old enough to travel on my own – that is, as soon as I’d passed my A-levels. My first trip was to New Zealand, where I discovered magnificent landscapes and lots of sheep… Since then, I’ve travelled the world extensively, even taking a year-long break from my work as a paediatric anaesthetist to go round the world. For me, photography is a form of expression that I discovered when I was about 13, and ever since, I’ve been constantly striving to capture the beauty of our wonderful planet. But beyond the marvellous landscapes one can discover whilst travelling the world, it is the people – and above all the children – who inhabit our planet that leave the deepest impression on me during my travels. Among the portraits I take, some photos are snapped on the spur of the moment, but most are taken after a while of playing and bonding with the children, even if we don’t speak the same language. Smiles, funny faces and gestures allow me to share special moments with these children
