MARC GIBELIN BLACK AND WHITE About the work People often talk about black and white. I, too, have been drawn to them ever since I first began drawing and painting. Neither colour nor the absence of colour, black and white exist both in opposition and in harmony. Their power is immense in art in all its forms. Black: depth, intensity and mystery; white: purity, minimalism and space. These two colours – or these two shades – create a canvas upon which our gaze rests, where forms and elements can interact gently or in contrast. When used with intention, black and white can not only transform a space, but also convey emotions, tell a story and even challenge our perceptions. Marc Gibelin After working for many years on figurative works, my artistic journey has gradually moved away from this form of representation towards an ‘abstrafigurative’ style. I consider the ‘abstrapigurative’ to be the reflection of an individual vision; it is the instinctive reflection of a moment that does not necessarily require an explanation or commentary. For me, it is a journey that starts from real-world references and moves towards an abstract interpretation or proposal. This gradually moves away from reality to take precedence, yet without ever severing its ties to it. The artist is always inspired by a particular sensibility or movement, but must gradually detach themselves from it in order to translate, in their own way, the invisible world of their thoughts – thoughts that are unusual, shocking, provocative, out of the ordinary; in short, deeply personal. Painting is a passion, a part of oneself that one must know how to share. 90 x 90 cm, Black and White
