Description
DENIS POURCHER OZO About the work: In this photograph, Denis Pourcher captures an icon of France’s motoring heritage. Located in Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, on the old RN 10 (now the D910), this service station has for decades been a fixture on the great summer journeys south-west and to Spain. Opened in 1956 by the Ozo petrol company and later incorporated into the Total group in the 1960s, it stands as a remarkable testament to the golden age of the motor car. Its totem-like sign, standing nearly 11 metres tall, and its vast canopy give it a distinctly American and futuristic look. Through the photographer’s lens, this place steeped in history becomes a symbol of freedom, escape and family memories. Holiday departures, stops along the A-roads and the carefree spirit of the Trente Glorieuses seem to resurface through this image steeped in nostalgia. This work perfectly illustrates Denis Pourcher’s sensitivity to the promotion of heritage and regional identity. Like the thousands of photographs he has dedicated to the Auvergne and its natural, industrial and cultural treasures, it demonstrates his ability to transform a familiar place into a universal visual narrative.
