JODIE WAY
GOD AND OLGA
About the work: ‘Do you remember where that God was? Everyone’s seen him a hundred times… ’ With this analogue photograph taken with a Holga – the legendary plastic camera known for its unique and poetic imagery – Jodie Way offers an offbeat perspective on an iconic detail of the former Hôtel-Dieu in Clermont-Ferrand. The title plays on collective memory: it is obviously not a religious reference, but rather a nod to the history of this major healthcare institution, which has left its mark on generations of patients, families and healthcare professionals. The image invites everyone to rediscover this familiar detail, glimpsed so many times without always paying it any mind. Jodie Way Born and raised in Châtel-Guyon, Jodie Way discovered analogue photography at a very young age. At the age of 15, her father set up a darkroom for her above the family café. It was a revelation that has stayed with her ever since. Now a professional photographer, she works for numerous institutions whilst continuing her personal practice, fuelled by her wanderings through the streets of Clermont-Ferrand, with her film cameras slung over her shoulder. For this image, she chose the Holga, that Chinese plastic ‘toy camera’ whose imperfections are part of its charm. True to her artisanal approach, Jodie also prints the photograph herself in her film darkroom
