Description
Alexandre CHARPENTIER (1856–1909), "Jean and Pierre, 1892" Rectangular gilded bronze plaque depicting Jean and Pierre, the artist’s son and nephew, mounted on a bevelled wooden backing. Signed at the bottom centre. 7.8 x 24 cm and with base: 15 x 31 cm Bibliography: Two examples of this plaque (patinated bronze), one belonging to the Musée d’Orsay, the other in the Hammerschlag collection, were exhibited (nos. 11 and 12) during the retrospective that the Musée d’Orsay dedicated to Charpentier in 2008. A pewter version is reported to be in the Dresden Museum, and another in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The plaque combines the portraits of the two first cousins: Jean, the artist’s eldest son, and Pierre, the son of his sister Emma, wife of Joly. The date of the work corresponds to the year of Pierre Joly’s birth, whereas the elder brother, Jean, was born in 1886. These portraits are misleading, as the two babies are depicted on the same plaque at different ages. Excerpt from "Alexandre Charpentier, Naturalism and Art Nouveau", Musée d'Orsay, Paris, 22 January–13 April 2008, p. 77.
