Description
BRUSSELS OR ENGHIEN Harvest scenes Flemish tapestry 240 x 300 cm 16th century, circa 1575 Wool and silk This is a very fine fragment of a larger tapestry. This small-figure harvest scene is both rare and interesting: in the top left-hand corner of the tapestry, some vines can be seen inside a fence; men are carrying baskets full of grapes and young women are carrying the fruit of the vine in baskets as they approach a small bridge with a revolving form; in the distance, other figures are pouring grapes into a press. In the foreground, a group of animals under a bush. Materials and condition The colours of this large fragment, woven in wool and silk (wool warp, wool and silk weft), are faded but pleasant. Expert: Nicole de Pazzis-Chevalier Expert in antique tapestries and European carpets, Member of the Syndicat Français des Experts Professionnels en Oeuvres d'Art (SFEP).
