MAP OF CANADA – EAST COAST DUVAL, Pierre. Map of Canada. Paris, 1676. Miniature map of Canada, the Great Lakes and the east coast of the United States, extending as far as Chesapeake Bay. Coloured. Map taken from the atlas *La Géographie Universelle* by Pierre Duval (1676). It is based on the Map of Canada by his uncle, Nicolas Sanson (1656). It focuses on French possessions in North America, particularly the Great Lakes. Lakes Superior and Michigan (Lac des Puants) are depicted with open western shores, whilst Lake Erie (Lac du Chat) is situated too far south. It includes the maritime route to the north-west of Hudson Bay. This is a third version of this map, featuring the addition of ‘Mer du Canada’ above ‘Mer du Nort’; and numerous new place names, including ‘3.Rivières’, ‘Manhate’ (i.e. Manhattan, attached to Amsterdam) and ‘Boston’ (attached to London).
