Description
THE VIRGIN OF VLADIMIR Russian icon, early 20th century, Moscow Mixed technique on panel with upholstered back (original velvet), covered with silver and vermeil embossed oklad (vestments of the Virgin and Christ) and engraved with latticework (background) and foliate scrolls (borders), with multicoloured opaque and translucent cloisonné enamels with applied "Slavonic Revival" motifs (four spandrels, two plates in the vertical borders, halos of Christ and the Virgin and a name plate in the lower border). The oklad bears the Moscow countermark 1908-1917 (Δ Kокоshnik 84), Master's hallmark ГС ~ Г.М СБИТНЕВ Grigoriy Mihailovitch SBITNEV (Goldsmith installed in 1893) The oklad, which has undergone an unsuccessful but undamaged attempt at cleaning, is in a perfect state of preservation notwithstanding a slight tear on the edge of the left vertical flap. The polychromy, completely intact, is covered with its original intact varnish, which is very oxidised. 14.5 x 18 cm A CHARGE DE CONTROLE Expert: LYDIA MANIC Icons - Appraisals - Restorations 14 rue J.J Rousseau 75001 Paris
