Description
THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD
Romania, 19th century (wood and metal) 20th century polychrome
Mixed technique on reused panel with double reinforcement on the front with a basma and embossed metal halos with reused floral decoration
The Dormition of the Virgin corresponds to the feast of the Assumption, with Christ coming to collect the soul of his mother, depicted in the form of a swaddled newborn baby. This is a very complete variant of the subject, with the Mother of God represented three times, asleep in death in the midst of the assembly formed by Christ, the angels, the apostles, the bishops and the women of Jerusalem, at the Gates of Paradise in the cloud in the upper register.
The narrative is predominant, with great attention to detail.
The icon is painted in a composite style that combines Slavic and Greek pictorial traditions.
