SCHOONEBEEK (Adrien). A Brief and Comprehensive History of the Founding of Religious Orders. With illustrations of their habits; engraved by Adrien Schoonebeek. Amsterdam, Adrien Schoonebeek, 1688. One in-8 volume, in a hardback of the period in vellum, with traces of a handwritten title on the spine. (4) ff., 144 pp., (2) ff.
French first edition published in the same year as the Dutch original. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, a vignette on the title page and 73 engraved plates depicting the habits of various religious orders, the last of which is titled ‘Ordo Distinguendi Colores’. Adrien Schoonebeek (1661–1705) was a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe in Amsterdam. At the invitation of Peter I, he opened an engraving workshop at the Armoury Palace in Moscow in 1698.
