Description
DUMAS (Alexandre, son). *The Lady of the Camellias*. Paris: Quantin, n.d. [1886]. One quarto volume, full blue morocco, ribbed spine richly decorated with mosaic fleurons and camellias, wide gilt frieze on the covers comprising mosaic and gilt camellias, doves perched on branches and palmettes, framed by a triple gilt fillet, gilded lace lining, all edges gilt, original covers preserved, edged slipcase (binding signed PAGNANT). Faults to the slipcase, jaws slightly rubbed.
41 original compositions by Albert Lynch, including 11 full-page etchings by Gaujean, Champollion and Massé, and 30 large chapter headpieces.
A deluxe edition with a preface by Jules Janin and a new, previously unpublished preface by the author, of which 130 numbered copies were printed. This copy is one of 100 copies on Japanese paper, with the etchings in two states: 1° prior to lettering and with a note on Japanese paper; 2° with lettering on Holland paper; the heliogravures with an additional hors-texte print on Japanese paper.
