Description
DELVAU (Alfred). An Anecdotal History of the Cafés and Cabarets of Paris. Paris, Dentu, 1862. One volume, in-12, in a contemporary green half-shagreen binding. (2) ff., 298 pp., (1) f. Spine faded, scattered foxing at the beginning of the volume, brown stain on 3 pages. A frontispiece drawn and engraved by Félicien Rops; 7 etchings printed on China paper (6 headpieces and a tailpiece) drawn and engraved by Flameng. Poulet-Malassis notes that the ‘Anler-Keller’ vignette attributed to Courbet was also engraved by Flameng ‘after a vague drawing by the master from Ornans’. First edition in which the author recounts anecdotes about 44 Parisian cafés and cabarets, “Parisian haunts, whether well- or ill-reputed, working-class or prudish”. From the F. Renard library, with an engraved ex-libris vignette.
