Description
HÉRÉDIA (José-Maria de). *Les Trophées*. Paris, n.p. [Published at the expense of René Descamps-Scrive, by L. Carteret], 1907. A large quarto volume, in full raspberry-coloured morocco with a mosaic decoration on the spine and mosaic foliage on the covers, a mosaic morocco band at the corners framing the covers, with the original vellum covers and spine preserved, gilt edges, and a edged slipcase (binding signed E. MAYLANDER).
An expanded edition featuring a foreword and two previously unpublished sonnets (‘Les Rostres’ and ‘Un Nom’), printed on behalf of Descamps-Scrive, president of the Société des Amis des Livres, and offered for subscription by the L. Carteret bookshop. It is illustrated with 50 compositions by LUC-OLIVIER MERSON (1 frontispiece, 16 full-page plates and 24 headpieces, etched by Léopold Flameng).
Printed in a run of 175 copies on Marais vellum. An unmarked contributor’s copy containing the rare suite of etchings in their first state.
Enriched with a letter from J. Carteret addressed to the bibliophile J. Hernandez, dated May 1930: “Dear Sir, when we launched the edition of Luc-Olivier Merson’s *Trophées*, published at Mr Descamps’s expense-Scrive, the five or six sets of etchings were not made available for sale, and Mr Descamps himself did not include any with his own copies. It is a rarity and a great curiosity […]. L. Carteret”.
