TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). *Elements of Botany, or A Method for Recognising Plants*. Paris, Royal Printing Office, 1694. 3 volumes, 8vo, 19th-century Lavallière half-calf, decorated spine. (10) folios, 562 pp., (9) folios, 451 plates. Some discolouration and pinholes. First edition of one of the seminal works of modern botany, in which Pitton de Tournefort established a method for classifying plants, which remained in use until Linnaeus’s system was introduced. It is adorned with a frontispiece title engraved on copper by Vermeulen, repeated in each volume, 1 vignette on the title page of Volume I, 2 headbands, 2 initials and 451 plates engraved from drawings by Claude Aubriet, comprising Volumes II and III [complete].
