[MAZOT (François)]. The Image of the Cross as depicted in the ceremonies of Holy Mass, together with the treasure of devotion to the sufferings of Our Lady. S.I.C. Paris, Mazot, 1651 (printing completed on 20 September 1652). A small 8vo volume, in contemporary red morocco, with gilt lace border, extensive small-scale ironwork decoration in the central panel, decorated spine, gilt edges, traces of a clasp. (48) folios. Wear and tear; two corners damaged; losses to the edges of the front cover; folios coming loose and unbound. A fully engraved work, which enjoyed great success in its day. Our copy comprises a title page, a dedication to the Marquis de Chasteauneuf accompanied on the opposite page by a portrait of the dedicatee by Geÿn, a note to the reader, 35 scenes depicting the progression of the Mass with the corresponding prayers opposite, 4 plates containing the Litany of the Saints, full-page portraits of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, accompanied on the opposite page by a litany, a title page and eight plates for the Story of David, two plates of prayers and a page containing an extract from the King’s Privilege. The engravings in the work are attributed to Johannes Collin, an engraver from Antwerp, who worked in Holland, Rome and Paris, as well as in England.
