Description
[HAUTES-ALPES / LARAGNE EMBANKMENT] - File relating to the construction and maintenance of the Laragne embankment to protect the Büec plain from flooding: several hundred handwritten and printed pages (1828–1938). The Buëch River has long posed a challenge for agricultural use of the Châteauneuf plain. The river’s floodplain, which was once very wide, varied with every flood, and secondary channels would form or silt up. Plans to build dykes to protect the Buëch plain from the river’s floods were first mooted as early as the mid-1780s, but were evidently never followed through. The first works, in the Iles district, date from the 1830s–1840s and were supplemented in the 1890s–1900s by the Pied du Plan dykes. This file is very useful for understanding the various phases of the works carried out in this area.
