[ALPES MARITIMES / NICE PENAL COLONY] - Set of 2 death certificates for 2 convicts from the Nice penal colony (1830, 1832). 2 paper documents, in Italian. The first convict, Giuseppe Meliore, was sentenced by the Royal Senate of Nice on 30 September 1830 to two years’ imprisonment for the repeated theft of beehives. He died on 12 January 1832 of pleurisy. The second, Giuseppe Augier, was sentenced on 6 February 1829 to three years’ imprisonment for the theft of money and grain. He died on 9 June 1830 as a result of marasmus and a chronic perineal fistula. The Nice penal colony was a prison reserved for hard labour. Between 1770 and 1854, it could accommodate up to two hundred convicts. It was situated to the east of the port of Nice, at the far end of the Quai d’Entrecasteaux. Death certificates for convicts, signed by the officer in charge of the port and the prison and intended for the family, are now very difficult to find.
