Description
[COTE-DOR / CHOLERA] – A collection of 25 letters from Sister Céline Marie Patriarche, a nurse at Beaune Hospital, to her parents, wine merchants in Beaune (July–September 1849). Two obituaries for Sister Céline Patriarche (19th and 20th centuries) are enclosed. Large pale stains, but the handwriting is legible. A fascinating collection of letters that recounts in great detail the devastation caused by the cholera epidemic that struck the Burgundian town and the zeal with which the Sisters of the Hospices came to the aid of the sick. Sister Céline Patriarche contracted cholera on 7 November 1849 and died the following day at the age of 27 after 20 hours of agony. 20 August 1849: “The man who, in a sense, was the ‘founder’ of the cholera—the one who was the first to catch it and who, humanly speaking, nevertheless spread it within our beloved house—is doing much better and is no longer at the ambulance station…”
