[VAL-DE-MARNE / SIEGE OF PARIS] – A remarkable account by a Sister of Saint Vincent from L’Haÿe-les-Roses of the fighting between the French and the Prussians during the siege of Paris, followed by the persecution the sisters endured at the hands of the Federates whilst in exile in Versailles: 1 handwritten register, 109 pages, in very good condition, beautiful and perfectly legible handwriting, complete (1870–1871) The nun describes in minute detail the arrival of the Prussian troops in September, the flight of the inhabitants, the difficult relations with the Uhlans, the requisitions, the quartering of troops, the fighting, the care of the wounded, the expulsion of the sisters and the sick to Versailles on 9 October, and the abuses committed by the Federates. ‘Shells and bullets flew over our heads and across our houses like hail driven by the wind from all directions. We were surrounded by the battle. The French had reached Mr Flouquet’s house. The Prussians were retreating, and then at last they prevailed. Then the fighting came to an end. Our wounded agreed that there were about six hundred of them, but that no more than fifteen men managed to escape.
