[MILITARIA / LOUIS AUGUSTE DE BOURBON] – Appointment of Guille de Chartre as Captain-General of the Artillery Workers in the Department of Flanders by Louis Auguste de Bourbon, Duke of Maine. Dated in Paris on 23 March 1718. Superb parchment with embossed seal on a simple tail and the autograph signature of Louis Auguste de Bourbon. 1 sheet, 51x34 cm (framed under glass with a gilded frame and passe-partout, 73x57 cm overall). A very fine piece, with highly legible handwriting and in very good overall condition. ‘We have chosen you to perform these duties henceforth, having been fully and duly informed of your judgement, competence, valour, courage, diligence, loyalty and devotion to the service of His Majesty, as well as of your skill and experience in the construction of all manner of fortifications, bridges, platforms and other works of artillery and warfare, of which you have provided us with proof both whilst following the armies and during the sieges and captures of several towns…’ Louis Auguste de Bourbon was Duke of Maine, Duke of Aumale, Sovereign Prince of Dombes, Count of Eu, Colonel-General of the Cent-Suisses and Grisons, General of the Galleys, Lieutenant-General of the Naval Forces, etc. Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 31 March 1670 and died in Sceaux on 14 May 1736, he was a legitimised son of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
