Description
[MILITARIA / HECTOR’S REGIMENT] – List of men assigned to the 1st combat detachment of Hector’s Regiment on the eve of the counter-revolutionary expedition to Quiberon. A handwritten table listing, for each man, his company, his surname and first name, his rank, his strengths and weaknesses, and his previous duties in the navy. Drawn up at Lymington on 26 March 1795. 1 sheet of paper (framed, under glass), 40.5 x 32 cm, 60 x 49 overall. An exceptional item.
Charles Jean d’Hector was a French naval officer. He became a squadron commander in 1779 and subsequently commander of the port of Brest. When the Revolution broke out, he emigrated to England, where, despite his lack of wealth, he raised a regiment of volunteers composed solely of former naval officers. This regiment, known as the Hector Regiment, took part in the Quiberon expedition in 1795, which ended in disaster for the émigrés. The regiment was reconstituted and Count Charles Jean d’Hector took command. He retired to Reading, near London, where he died in 1808.
