[COLONEL HYPPOLITE LAURE / 2nd RTA] – Archive collection comprising a manuscript entitled *La Guerre, Étudiée D’après Le Caractère National Et Les Ressources Matérielles Des Deux Peuples (published in 1858) and personal correspondence (more than fifty autograph letters signed by prominent figures) Manuscript of the work published in 1858 (pages 1 to 44 only): notebook, 30x20 cm, in beautiful cursive handwriting Plans for an English-language edition with the publisher Henri Plon Numerous expressions of appreciation and letters of thanks for the book: the general commanding the Constantine division, the Minister of War Charles Adolphe Caille, Major-General Charles Marie Espinasse, Major-General Jacques Camou, the Governor-General of Algeria, Viala Charon; Marshal François Certain de Canrobert; Major-General François de Chabaud-Latour; the Countess of Cambacérès; Lucien Murat… Of particular note is a magnificent letter dated 14 August 1858 in Savigny from Aimée Leclerc, Marshal Davout’s wife and Princess of Eckmühl Letters of recommendation Personal records (extracts from marriage and death certificates, service records, a life annuity of 1,500 francs for Mrs Laure, née Marie Louise Brachet) Born in Hyères in 1815, Hyppolite Adolphe Laure was a French military officer. He enjoyed a distinguished career as an officer and was promoted to colonel on 19 November 1855. He took part in numerous campaigns in Africa and Italy. He was killed whilst leading his regiment at Solferino on 24 June 1859.
