[MILITARIA / 1914–1918] - A fine collection of archives belonging to Second Lieutenant Jacques Thomas, alias Jean Taride, an Alsatian born in 1898, who enlisted as a volunteer in the French artillery at the age of 18 and was sentenced to death by the German authorities (1916–1954). A superb album containing nearly 150 thumbnail-sized photographs, maps, a commendation, an intelligence report, etc. Certificates, medals (Volunteer Combatant’s Cross, French Recognition Medal, Saint-Mihiel Medal, Medal of Honour for Civic Merit, maps of the offensive of 26 September 1918) Press cuttings, safe-conduct issued by the French Consulate in Switzerland Book: *The President of the Republic in Lorraine and Alsace* (7–11 December 1918) File on the Treaty of Versailles (press cuttings, bilingual agenda signed by General A. Jacques Thomas was director of the fuel oil company in Huningue and vice-president of the National Federation of Volunteer Combatants of the Bas-Rhin. He enlisted as a volunteer at the age of 18 on the French front after travelling to France via Switzerland and being sentenced by the German court-martial in Strasbourg. Mr Thomas fought in Champagne on the Chemin des Dames, in the Somme and at Verdun, and ended the war as commander of a 155-millimetre short-range battery. He was the first French officer to enter Strasbourg at the time of the armistice. On 28 June 1919, alongside Colonel A. Henry, he was responsible for welcoming the plenipotentiaries who had come to Versailles to attend the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
