Description
[MILITARIA / AVIATION] – Set of 44 invitation cards and other correspondence for Commander Jean Vautrin and his wife: the Afghan Minister in Paris, Colonel Fuller, military attaché at the US Embassy, the Polish Ambassador, the Minister of the Republic of Liberia, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Lady Mendl, the Countess of Kerchove de Denterghem, the Romanian Minister, etc. (1937). Jean Vautrin (1897, Sedan – 1943, Monastir) was a French military officer. Having enlisted as a volunteer during the First World War, during which he was commended eight times, he was appointed military attaché to the Netherlands and chief of staff to the Minister of War in 1930. He subsequently commanded the 9th Battalion of Chasseurs d’Antibes and took part in the battles of Belgium and Dunkirk. After the armistice, he organised the Resistance in the south-east of the country. General de Gaulle appointed him Chief of Staff of the 1st Free French Division. He died in a plane crash on 28 April 1943 in Monastir.
