[MILITARIA / HENRY DE L'ESCAILLE] – A beautiful and moving collection of letters from Henry de L'Escaille to Anna Foltz, the love of his life, who would later become Madame Delbos. He speaks at length of the grief that overwhelms him and, during his stay in Tonkin, describes the countries he passes through, the people and their customs: 11 letters from Saigon, Hong Kong, Colombo, Tché-Fou, Cap-Saint-Jacques (1905–1907), 44 letters to Anna Delbos in Paris and Cannes (1912–1931), press cuttings on the Saint-Raphaël–Ajaccio crossing by seaplane (1914), a photograph, a map and an obituary. Henry de L’Escaille, an aviation pioneer and accomplished pilot, made the return crossing from Saint-Raphaël to Ajaccio by seaplane in 1914. A naval lieutenant, he commanded a squadron of Nieuport seaplanes based in Bizerte, tasked with defending the Suez Canal and the Dardanelles.
