Description
[MERCHANT NAVY / PASSENGER SHIP RIO GRANDE] - Logbook of the passenger ship Rio Grande, beginning with its second voyage, No. 43, which departed on 4 October 1879 from Marseille to Constantinople via Smyrna; followed by several other voyages in the Mediterranean (the Dardanelles, Odessa, Piraeus…) and in the Black Sea as far as Asia (Suez, Aden, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai). Logbook, hardback cover, 29x19 cm.
The logbook is organised as follows: the Rio-Grande’s logbook (pp. 1–42), a catalogue of the captain’s library? (pp. 43–48), navigational coordinates and miscellaneous notes (pp. 49 to the end)
The Rio-Grande was a passenger steamer launched at La Seyne in 1859 under the name Navarre for the South American route. Refitted in 1872 at La Ciotat, it continued on the La Plata route until 1876, then on the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean–Black Sea routes. It was scrapped in 1892 in Marseille.
