Description
[RENAUD DE MONTAUBAN / THE KING’S CUPBEARER] – Receipt for 400 livres issued by Renaud de Montauban, Lord of Bauquemarc, for two years’ salary as cupbearer to King Henry II (15 July 1556). Oblong parchment, 32x13, autograph signature. Enclosed is a receipt for 162 livres 10 sols which François de Cenesme, Lord of Luzarches, received as his wages for serving as lieutenant of a company of 40 lancers: oblong parchment, 32x17, autograph signature.
The cupbearer Renaud de Montauban was the officer responsible for serving drinks to King Henry II. Owing to the constant fear of intrigues and plots, the post was entrusted to a person in whom the sovereign placed his complete trust.
