[CHARLES FOUQUET, DUKE OF BELLE-ISLE] – A fine set of four documents signed by Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, Duke of Belle-Isle: 1 signed letter to the Earl of Walsh (Versailles, 1760); 1 note to the Count of Gisors (1758); a letter to the Count of La Noue (1760); an order of protection in favour of Mr Reymondy’s property at La Turbie (1747). Two engravings are included: one of Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet and one of his grandfather. Of particular note is the fine order of protection in favour of Mr Reymondy at La Turbie, issued during the fighting between the French troops commanded by the Duke of Belle-Isle and the Austro-Sardinian forces in the War of the Austrian Succession: ‘It is expressly forbidden, on pain of punishment, for all soldiers, cavalrymen, dragoons, and all others, without exception, to cause any harm or damage to the houses and property belonging to Monsieur Reymondy situated at La Turbie in the County of Nice; we forbid, on pain of death, all soldiers and others from touching or removing anything from the said houses and property… Menton, 21 June 1747” Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, Duke of Belle-Isle, was born in Villefranche-de-Rouergue in 1684 and died in Versailles in 1761. A French officer and diplomat, he was appointed Marshal of France in 1740. He was the grandson of Nicolas Fouquet, Superintendent of Finances, whom Louis XIV had imprisoned for life (some believe he was the famous Man in the Iron Mask).
