Description
ABELAM, Maprik District, Papua New Guinea. Hardwood, natural pigments. The Abelam people practise the longest and most spectacular initiation cycle of all the peoples of New Guinea. From childhood, every Abelam man must undergo eight distinct initiation rites over a period of twenty to thirty years before becoming a fully initiated man. This monumental male sculpture, a ‘nggwalndu’ topped with two long-beaked bird heads, represents the powerful spirits of the clan and was used during the final ritual in the men’s ceremonial house, the ‘Korombo’. For the Abelam, the paint covering this large sculpture is a magical substance that bestows supernatural power and beauty upon the figures. H. 310 cm. Expert: Christian NJIENSI
