The Abelam people practise the longest and most spectacular initiation cycle of all the peoples of New Guinea. From childhood, every Abelam man must undergo eight distinct initiation rites over a period of twenty to thirty years before becoming a fully initiated man.
Monumental ‘nggwalndu’ sculpture representing the powerful spirits of the clan, used during the final ritual in the men’s ceremonial house, the ‘Korombo’.
