BERMUDES COMPANY 17th century / British Territory - Token / Six pence SOMMER ISLANDS coin (* ) - Standing wild boar in profile - Circular legend "Sommer Island - Reverse: large commercial sailing ship - Silver plated copper - 3.24 grams -TTB.
( * ) in 1609 nine colonist ships bound for the new colony of Jamestown / Virginia were wrecked on the Sommer Islands. The passengers found many wild pigs left behind a century earlier by a Spanish explorer. On 29 June 1615, the Bermuda Company was created to colonise these islands. The Company's authorisation included the right to mint coins. The wild pig was used as a decorative motif and to represent the islands.
