Via, for Lyon / France. - Carries very rare claw on the front "AERONAUTIQUE MILITAIRE, DETACHEMENT de L' AVIATION FRANCAISE A VENISE" ( * ) - on the reverse mention F.M. and regimental stamp to the seated Republic "AVIATION FRANCAISE VENISE - le commandant" - interesting correspondence: "Lido Venise le 27 mars 1916...this morning I was woken up at 4 a.m. by the telephone, no light, the electricity had been cut off, because there was an alert of two enemy aircraft heading for Venice ... one of the Boche aircraft was shot down, the other put out of action before arriving here ... if you had seen me with the captain, both of us in full dress, marching about and banging on doors ... etc....
your husband who loves you and kisses you Lt LIEUTIER".
( * ) ESCADRILLE 92/1 N 561 owes its creation to the raids undertaken by the Austrian air force (hydro-aeroplanes) on Venice shortly after Italy entered the war on the side of the allies in 1915. As the Italian air force was woefully inadequate, the French government, aware of the diplomatic gesture, offered half a squadron to defend the city and its heritage, so dear to the hearts of Italians and people the world over. The squadron was assembled in Lyon, which it left on 13 August 1915 to set up in Bazzera. Its flying personnel consisted of just three pilots and 3 observers, led by Captain Marcel de Chalonge. The aircraft were NIEUPORT 10 two-seaters. The squadron was later increased to six aircraft. This shows how rare these folders are, involving just ten or so soldiers.
(see detailed history: Forum pages 14-18); squadron _ 561).
