( * ) On 11 August 1962 the VOSTOK 3 capsule took off from the BAIKONOUR cosmodrome with Adrien Nikolaïev on board. The following day, August 12, Pavel Popovitch took off aboard Vostok 4. This was a highly publicised first for the Soviets, and an important one in the space battle with the Americans. The 2 ships passed each other less than 5 km apart! The Russians proclaimed the mission to be the 1st space rendezvous in history.
