Stamps appeared in France after the 1st World War when there was a shortage of small change. They disappeared in 1924, when small metal coins were once again available in sufficient quantities. At first, stamps were inserted in small translucent cellophane pouches closed by an advertising label. These pouches had the disadvantage of being very fragile and were soon replaced by metal capsules. Sources: Yvert 2003 and catalogue of Mr Pierre BROUSTINE.
