Description
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), *The Pearls of the Ebb Tide* and *The Fujiwara Clan’s Scythe*, Japanese woodblock print (Surimono), c. 1890, 21.5 x 17.5 cm. From the series: the four great clans of Japan (Shisei No Uchi). The Pearls of the Ebb Tide are placed alongside the Fujiwara clan’s scythe on a silk cloth, decorated with plum blossoms, draped over a three-legged table. Two poems accompany the composition. The Fujiwara clan (Fujiwara-shi) is a family of the Japanese nobility from which many emperors descended during the Nara and Heian periods, from the 8th to the 12th centuries AD. Branches of the clan continued to play an important role in Japanese aristocracy right up to the present day. The name Fujiwara means ‘wisteria enclosure’.
