CHEMINS DE FER 1862 - ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FRENCH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS: diameter 11.2 centimetres - Copper, weight 581 grammes. Work of BOVY, very high relief in bright patinated flan bowl, ship's prow hallmark. LOUIS PHILIPPE I KING OF THE FRENCH, laurelled bust in profile to the left. Reverse: at the top "DANT IOGNATAS MARTI NOVASQUE MERCURIO ALAS". in the exergue, Mr TESTE Minister of Public Works. Mr LEGRAND under secretary of state. in the centre: allegorical group comprising the State enthroned, holding in his left hand tables marked on 3 lines "CHEMIN DE FER", indicating with his right the road to Mercury flying away, while on the left a warrior flies away carrying sword and shield. On the pedestal with plateau resting on 2 columns, in a cartouche under a royal crown, in 4 lines: LOI DU XI JUIN M.D.CCC.XLII / LOUIS PHILIPPE REGNANT.
