Description
ORDINANCE OF LOUIS XIV, King of France and Navarre, issued at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in the month of August 1670 concerning criminal matters. P., 1670, In-4, 4 folios, 165 pages, 23 folios. Contemporary full calf binding, ribbed spine.
Contemporary handwritten annotations in the margins.
First edition. A landmark ordinance drawn up in accordance with the same principles that had governed the drafting of the Code Louis (1667), it radically reformed criminal procedure. It followed on from the reform of civil procedure in 1667 and 1669. This ordinance, a veritable code in the modern style, is the text that best expresses the spirit of criminal procedure under the Ancien Régime, the defining features of which were secrecy, the use of written records and the relative absence of cross-examination.
