Description
ORDINANCE OF LOUIS XIV, King of France and Navarre, issued at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in April 1667. Paris, published by the Associates appointed by order of His Majesty, 1667. In-4. Contemporary full calf binding, with a decorated ribbed spine.
First edition. Louis XIV first set about reforming the justice system and codifying civil procedure in order to standardise it and remedy the variations observed in the judicial practice of the parliaments, and to establish rules applicable throughout the kingdom. From 1665 onwards, the King presided over a Council of Justice which examined the drafts; the texts were then revised by a commission, and the King himself settled the contentious points. The ‘Civil Ordinance on the Reform of the Judiciary’, commonly known as the ‘Code Louis’, divided into thirty-five titles, was promulgated in April 1667.
(Binding worn, with old annotations in the margins and on the endpapers). – Expert: François GIARD
