VOLTAIRE. Complete Works. Published by the Société Littéraire Typographique, the so-called ‘Kehl’ edition, 1784 and 1785–1789, 70 volumes in-8, bound in green half-basane with corner pieces, spines with evenly worn raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons. Scattered foxing, a few browned leaves. A copy on laid paper, illustrated with 290 engraved plates, namely: 70 portraits, mostly by Saint-Aubin, a bird’s-eye view by Picquet (History of Russia), 205 plates by Moreau and Moreau the Younger, and 14 scientific plates (Newton). It comprises, on the one hand, the illustrations intended for the deluxe prints of this edition, plus a large supplement of illustrations intended for the Renouard edition of Voltaire’s Works in 66 volumes in-8°, published between 1819 and 1825. “An edition which may be regarded as the only truly authentic and truly complete one”. For the first time, it includes the author’s extensive correspondence, several plays and other curious works that had remained unpublished. A prestigious in-8° edition in 70 volumes on large-format paper (the other edition being in in-12° format in 92 volumes). Volumes I–IX: Plays, a portrait of Voltaire after Largillière, a frontispiece and 88 illustrations by Moreau and Moreau the Younger. Volume X: *La Henriade*, a portrait of Henry IV engraved by Tardieu after Pourbus and 20 illustrations. Volume XI: *La Pucelle*, 5 portraits (Charles VII by Maviez, the Count of Dunois engraved by Fosseyeux after the original from the King’s Cabinet, Joan of Arc, engraved by Beisson and one by Delvaux, and Agnès Sorel, engraved by Maviez from a drawing by Moreau based on the King’s Cabinet) and 42 illustrations. Volume XII: Poems and Speeches. Volume XIII: Epistles, Stanzas and Odes. Volume XIV: Tales in Verse and Satires, 9 illustrations. Volume XV: Letters. Volumes XVI to XIX: Essay on Manners, 2 portraits (one by de La Tour, and Henry IV by Saint-Aubin). Volumes XX–XXI: The Age of Louis XIV, 25 portraits and 2 illustrations.
