Description

The Cries of Paris, Paris, c. 1760 Folded fan, the double panel of paper painted in gouache. On one side, eleven cartouches feature portraits of small street traders known as the ‘cris de Paris’, familiar notably from Larmessin’s engravings. One can recognise a water-carrier in the centre, an umbrella seller, and a hurdy-gurdy player. The reverse is painted with a tower set amongst copses and trees. Ivory mount (Elephantidae spp.) painted with flowers framing a panel in which a couple are enjoying the garden in front of their home. Height: 27 cm.
