Description
OTTOMAN TRAVEL INKSTAND, known as a ‘Divit’, in gilded and silver-plated brass, engraved with calligraphic designs. Late 19th century, early 20th century. Length: 24 cm. Note: This Ottoman divit is a faceted inkwell with a hinged lid, designed to be attached to a pen case (qalamdan). It allowed scribes and officials to keep their ink safe whilst still having convenient access to it. Its compact size and locking mechanism made it an indispensable accessory for writing whilst travelling.
