336 pp. FIRST EDITION. A very rare work, unknown to Barbier, Quérard, Monglond…
Published by Jean-Jacques Rixain, for whom this treatise was written in 1796 by an uncle. The dedication “to my nephew Jean-Jacques Rixain” is dated Clermont, 20 March 1796.
“The work appearing today was written in 1796 to remedy the gaps in my education, the inevitable consequences of the turmoil of the Revolution.” Note by J. J. Rixain at the beginning of the book. A treatise condemning the philosophers, novelists and playwrights of the 18th century in favour of the “priests of the true religion and the disciples of sound philosophy”, who must “cherish the government” (of the future Louis XVIII). At the end there is a ‘Glance at the political state of Europe in July 1796’, supplemented by a postscript dated June 1801
