Description
[Mélusine: A Review]. GAIDOZ (Henri), ROLLAND (Eugène). Mélusine: A Review of Mythology, Popular Literature, Traditions and Customs. Paris, Librairie Viaut, then Lechevalier, then Welter, 1877–1912. 4 folio volumes (volumes 1, 3, 4 and 11) in modern red half-basane binding with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, covers preserved.
The journal *Mélusine* was founded in 1877 as a series of monthly instalments by Henri Gaidoz and Eugène Rolland, with the subtitle: *A Collection of Mythology, Popular Literature, Traditions and Customs*. These were compiled into volumes in 1878. Eleven volumes appeared between 1878 and 1912, though their publication schedule was irregular. Publication was suspended between 1879 and 1883, and again between 1901 and 1911. In 1888, Eugène Rolland stepped down as editor of *Mélusine*, but Henri Gaidoz continued to publish his articles and transcriptions until 1912, posthumously. (Bérose Encyclopaedia of the History of Anthropology)
“Popular literature from France and abroad—that is to say, tales, ballads, songs, proverbs, riddles, folk festivals and dances, customs, traditions, superstitions, etc.—this is our field…” It is in these terms that the founders of *Mélusine* defined the scope of their journal.
The set presented here comprises the first and last volumes of the collection, as well as two further volumes.
