Description
Large Savonnerie point carpet France Late 19th century Wool velvet on cotton backing, accidents, tears, wear and natural oxidation. Design reminiscent of the carpets of the late 17th century under Louis XIV, inspired by the cartoons of Charles Le Brun. Black field with a richly ornamented and perfectly symmetrical composition, characteristic of the decorative taste developed during the reign of Louis XIV, structured around a central medallion with a richly flowered crown in pastel tones and with stylised horn-of-plenty endings, composed of a tangle of acanthus scrolls, foliage and naturalistic flowers. The composition is framed by an inner rectangular reserve, itself underlined by a highly developed main border, decorated with a continuous, dense and rhythmic floral decoration, reinforcing the effect of depth and monumentality. The spandrels and the median and transverse axes are subtly marked with radiating motifs and mirrored components. Main border with motifs echoing the central field. The ensemble is characterised by a great wealth of ornamentation, a rigorous symmetry inherited from French classicism and a lush but controlled decorative vocabulary, combining naturalism and stylisation. This carpet is clearly in the style of the Manufacture de la Savonnerie (famous for its production for royal residences and grand ceremonial settings (notably the Palais du Louvre and the Château de Versailles). 380 x 284 cm
